Following a fortuitous meeting on the streets of Budapest, Hungary in the 1940s, the Leibers married and moved to America in pursuit of their dreams of careers in art and fashion.  They established themselves in New York City and began taking steps to make their dreams a reality – Gerson studied at the Art Students League, and Judith took jobs at various fashion houses, including one led by esteemed fashion designer Nettie Rosenstein.

By the mid-1960s, Mr. and Mrs. Leiber had achieved success in their creative fields.  As the founder of her eponymous handbag company, Judith Leiber elevated the minaudière to an iconic fashion accessory.  Her elegant handbags, which resemble works of art, are enjoyed by prominent figures in fashion, art, and politics.

Gerson Leiber, a highly regarded artist, has paintings, etchings and drawings featured in museums and galleries around the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and The Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.

Stair is honored to be offering a group of items from the Collection of Gerson and Judith Leiber in our Fine Sale on April 27 and 28th.  Their collection was lovingly amassed over many years and is a reflection of their creative talents and a life surrounded by beauty, art and design.
