Roy Davis, A Forty-Year Friendship.
‘No matter how interesting a life one thinks one makes for oneself, in the end it all depends on the quality of the people one gets to hang out with. I was lucky in that regard, thanks to a forty-year friendship with Roy Davis, one the few really interesting people it’s been my privilege to know. Roy had it all: he was shrewd, erudite, prickly, polymathic. With Roy I could discuss the Giants and Knicks, or Prendergast and Homer and David Levine, or the way Robert Lehman liked his drawings framed (Roy was Bobbie’s framer of choice).
As a dealer, with his wife Cecily Langdale as his indispensable partner, his “eye” reflected his artistic genius. As far as I’m concerned, he seldom if ever set a visual foot wrong, and my walls reflect his taste. I miss him terribly.’
