Selected Property from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Gutfreund
Stair is pleased to be offering selections from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Gutfreund’s iconic Fifth Avenue apartment. The Gutfreunds’ home was decorated by Henri Samuel, one of the pre-eminent designers of the 20th century who was known as the master of the French interior. Highlights from the Gutfreund’s collection will include a Louis XVI-style blue and white painted tester bed that was designed by Samuel for the apartment’s toile bedroom, and a set of six Chinese Export painted and framed panels that were installed in the master bedroom suite. Other highlights include a group of modern brass-mounted lacquer end tables by Maison Jansen, a rare group of Russian karelian birch boxes, Sevres, Meissen and Chinese Export porcelain, crystal stemware and silver table articles. Stuart Thornton botanicals, an array of carpets and the rug Henri Samuel designed for the Gutfreund’s dining room, inspired by a rug in Sir John Soane’s Museum in London, will also be included in the sale. Also of interest are a chic dressing table and matching chair made by French cabinet-maker Eugene Printz, and a modern botanical-decorated cabinet designed by Josef Frank. Numerous pieces of upholstered furniture and bolts of fabric from the Parisian atelier of Georges le Manach round out the sale and speak to Mrs. Gutfreund’s taste and design acumen.
