Outsider, Naïve and Street Art in the Collection of Donald Baechler
As an artist, Donald Baechler avoided polished, straightforward narrative to focus on process-based compositions that were unruly accumulations of images and symbols. Baechler was interested in untrained, self-taught artists who forged their own art-making practices, buying works of art by children, amateurs and the mentally challenged whose unfettered art was very appealing to him. Into this category fall works of art by Outsider artists such as Mose Tolliver, Aboriginal artist Liddy Napanangka Walker, street artist Joe Grillo, and the childlike, naïve drawings of artists Ray Hamilton, Arnold Schmidt and Josef Bachler.
