Property from two interiors designed by icons in the world of interior design highlights our November Thursday Morning at STAIR sale, offering a glimpse into the rarefied world of interiors at the highest level. Respected for his connoisseurship and imagination, interior designer and architect Robert Couturier has been at the top of his profession for decades, named annually to Architectural Digest’s prestigious list of the world’s best designers, his name synonymous with sophistication and whimsy. Included in this sale is furniture, decorations and fine art from his New York residence, including  a Herve van der Straeten “Epine” goat hair and bronze stool, a Harumi Klossowska de Rola gilt-bronze mounted rock crystal model of mistletoe, and drawings by Camille Pissarro and Edouard Vuillard. Complementing the Continental style of the Couturier interior is property from a residence in The Carlyle House designed by the classic English firm Colefax and Fowler and Lady Vivian Greenock, whose career began in Colefax and Fowler’s Ebury Street showroom in London. English country house design was finessed by Greenock to create a layered effect that resulted in a subtly “undecorated” look that was coveted by socialites, tastemakers and powerbrokers. Highlights from this beautifully appointed apartment include furniture with bespoke upholstery designed by Colefax and Fowler and Greenock, porcelain and Clare Potter earthenware models of flowers, English creamware, silver flatware by Tiffany & Co., an extensive Baccarat glass stemware service, and botanical prints and landscape paintings. A curated selection of furniture, decorations and fine art from various other owners and estates rounds out this sale, including a large group of European paintings and works on paper, a pair of Victorian table globes, Asian pottery, and English and American silver.
