The Garden of Aso Tavitian: A Cultivated Masterpiece

Behind the carefully curated walls of his Berkshire estate, Aso Tavitian crafted a world where art and nature converged.

Nestled within the rolling hills of the Berkshires, Aso Tavitian’s sprawling, six-acre estate, was a meticulously crafted landscape. Winding stone walls and tiered gardens threaded through the landscape like the remnants of an old-world folly, their deliberate design blurring the lines between nature and curation. Towering evergreens stood as silent sentinels, while dense clusters of hydrangea, sedum, hosta, and ivy unfolded in a dance of concealment and revelation. Hidden within this lush, almost theatrical setting, was a striking collection of Garden Statuary, each piece carefully placed to emerge unexpectedly, as if summoned by the landscape itself.

On March 19-21, 2025, STAIR will present The Collection of Aso O. Tavitian with a focus on garden statuary offered in Part II on Thursday, March 20th. Guided by a relentless curiosity and an instinctive appreciation for quality, Aso Tavitian extended his collecting ethos within this category as well, with the inclusion of a group from The Piet Jonker Collection.

Garden Statuary from The Piet Jonker Collection.

In addition to The Piet Jonker Collection, there are many impressive stone carvings, one of which is Lot 367, Fine French Marble Figure of Venus d’Arles, After the Antique.

The goddess of love remains one of the most revered Roman deities—a lasting symbol of the connection between romance and artistry. This Fine French Marble Figure of Venus d’Arles, After the Antique, is a striking sculpture modeled after the celebrated 100 BC prototype, now housed in the Louvre.

Buried for centuries beneath the ruins of a Roman theater in Southern France, the original Venus d’Arles was discovered in 1651 by workmen digging a well. Unearthed in fragments, it was later restored by royal sculptor François Girardon (1628–1715) and presented to Louis XIV to adorn the Galerie des Glaces at the Palace of Versailles.
