#211: ANTON MELBYE (1818-1875): SHIP WRECK
Oil on canvas, 42 1/2 x 60 5/8 in., signed and dated 1871
lower left. Note: Melbye studied at the Danish Royal Academy
of Art. He traveled extensively. In the West Indies he befriended
Camille Pissarro. He visited Frederick Church at Olana and
left some sketches of his and Pissarro's for safekeeping
when he took off for the Orient in 1875. These sketches are
still in the collection of Olana. According to the consignor,
Pissarro sometimes painted the sky in Melbye's works. Also,
this picture is said to depict the sinking of the Russian
frigate "Alexander Nevsky" off the coast of Jutland
on September 25, 1868. In the days after the shipwreck, the
ship's furnishings and fittings were rowed to land in fishing
boats and sold at a number of major auctions. The numerous
amount of fine furniture and other fittings were thus scattered
over a large part of West Jutland. Many of these objects,
including the ship's anchor, were part of a joint exhibition
by the Kystcentret Thyboron and the Lemvig Museum that opened
in June 2006.
