Lot #23: FIVE PORTRAITS OF UTE BRAVES
Mounted on paper in a 15 x 20 in. frame, "Capt. Jack," "Ouray," "Prab [?]," "Utte Brave" and "Utte Boy." Note: Ouray was an important leader and diplomat. He spoke several Indian languages as well as English and Spanish. He understood federal law and by negotiation he was able to protect the right of his people. Capt. Jack participated in the attack against Indian agent Nathan Meeker in 1879. After Federal troops were called in, Chief Ouray negotiated a settlement of the hostilities.
