Lot #365: OVAL MINIATURE ON IVORY OF JOHN ADAMS DIX, GOVERNOR OF NY, 1872-1874
Signed M. Perine at left. 3 1/8 x 2 1/4 in. Ribbon tied reeded gilt-metal surround & satinwood frame. Dix was born in Boscawen, N.H. on July 24, 1798. He served as a junior officer in the War of 1812; he was the adjutant general of NY in 1830, NY Secretary of State from 1833-1839. He served in the Senate from 1845-1849 and was Secretary of the U.S. Treasury in 1861. He died in 1879. Fort Dix in N.J. is named after him.
