Note: William Couper,
a distinguished American
sculptor, embarked on
a Grand Tour in 1872 where he
was trained in the
Victorian & European style of
sculpture. He stayed
in Italy for more than twenty
years. Upon returning
to America in 1897, Couper became a founding
member of the Montclair Art Museum
and retired in 1913.
He is remembered for his
portrait busts,
allegorical works, and historical
sculptures, such as
the Confederate Soldier that
stands atop the
Confederate monument in Couper's
hometown of Norfolk,
