This large and varied group was all purchased on September 27, 2004 at Christie’s, Ashurst Kent from the Michael Roberts collection of architectural and garden ornament auction.
There are several signed and dated lots of Coade stone. The Coade stone factory was started in 1769 in Lambeth, by Mrs. Eleanor Coade (1733-1821), it also had other manufactures like Doulton. It is highly unusual to find a group of such high quality and fine condition. Many of the lots offered are depicted in the 1784 “Descriptive Catalogue of Coades Articficial Stone Manufactory.”
There are also several lots, either manufactured or attributed
to John Marriot Blashfield, who also worked at Coade and
struck out on his own. This sale also includes high quality
French terracotta, as well as cast stone garden decoration.
The architectural fittings are also amazing and span 300
years of English and continental style. |
