Lot #929: ADOLF ALEXANDER WEINMAN (1870-1952): "LAVS VIRTVTIS HEROIS PRAEMIVM
Bronze relief rondel with a running nude youth carrying a flambeau torch, the Latin inscription over an acorn-laden oak branch, signed; 23 in. diam. Note: This is the full size bronze of the obverse of a Railroad Lifesaving medal that Weinman was commissioned to do for the Untied States in 1905. There is correspondence indicating that Theodore Roosevelt wanted copies of both sides to hang in his house in Oyster Bay. Weinman was a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, and worked with him on Theodore Roosevelt's Special Inaugural medal. He is best known as the designer of the "Mercury" Dime, and the Walking Liberty Half dollar (both of which were first released in 1916).
