William Secord, and the eponymous William Secord Gallery, have led the scholarship on dog paintings in North America for decades, helping to establish a robust market for works of art depicting dogs and the sporting activities they play a part in. With an academic focus on the representation of dogs in the history of art, Secord established himself as the world authority on nineteenth century dog painting, writing many books on the subject that have become bibles for the genre. Highlights from this curated selection of paintings from the William Secord Gallery include two works by Charles Olivier de Penne of Sporting Hounds, a charming work titled Setter in the Field by Jean-Léon Gerome, a painting by Walter Hunt of a playful Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and a selection of prints of Sporting Dogs by Maud Earl.

Charles Olivier de Penne (1831-1897) Five Hounds at Rest, Oil on board, 10 5/8 x 8 3/8 in., 21 x 18 1/2 in. (frame).
