Art dealer and collector Paul Kasmin (1960-2020) was known for his independent eye and connoisseurship across collecting categories. Kasmin opened his first art gallery in New York in 1989, devoting himself to a life of art and artists.
A cultural polymath, Kasmin built a collection of paintings, photography, sculpture, furniture and objets d’art that reveal a great breadth of taste and an intellectual curiosity that spanned from the history of art to literature and the natural world.
Property from the Collection of Paul Kasmin is featured in the Art & Design sale on Tuesday, November 19 and the 20th Century, Modern & Contemporary sale on Thursday, November 21.
Informed by a childhood spent among artists with his father, the famed London dealer John Kasmin, along with extensive global travels and time spent in beautiful homes in New York City and the Hudson Valley, Kasmin’s significant achievements as a dealer were interwoven with his good taste and an extraordinary instinct for collecting.
Kasmin delighted in curiosities, and the artists and makers who created them. A photographer himself from a young age, Kasmin had a special interest in the medium, opening his eponymous gallery with an exhibition of photographic works by Constantin Brancusi and representing many contemporary artists who specialized in the medium.
The Collection of Paul Kasmin is eclectic and broad, representing Kasmin’s keen eye and singular vision to present a range of historical material together in a way that was loyal to history and committed to the artists he believed in. STAIR is pleased to offer Property from the Collection of Paul Kasmin in our upcoming Fall sales.
