Property from the Collection of Henry B. Holt in Americana
Collector and art dealer Henry B. Holt had a passion for American art that became a lifelong interest and vocation. Mr. Holt did not start out in the art business, he began as a teacher and then worked in the insurance industry. Over the years, he grew to love art and established himself as a widely respected dealer of American art and Americana. Together with his wife Mary, they amassed a significant personal art collection which grew to encompass American paintings, folk art, American furniture, and other works of art that he loved. Important works in the collection included paintings by Grandma Moses, a Harnett painting now in the Princeton Museum, an original Spirit of ‘76, a James E. Bard currently hanging in the Metropolitan Museum’s American Wing, and works by Norman Rockwell. The Holts’ home was full of charm and embraced good New England taste and sensibility. On August 1st, as part of our Americana sale, STAIR is pleased to offer pieces from Mr. Holt’s collection, including works by Ralph Eugene Cahoon, Marine paintings by Antonio Jacobsen, Charles Lundgren, Frank Vining Smith, and James Sessions, as well as Nantucket baskets and a group of distinctive weathervanes including a rare full-body grasshopper.
