The Estate of Philip and Kathleen Seibel of Catskill, NY
Reminiscences from their son Philip:
Kathleen Seibel always had an interest in antiques even as a child. She started collecting antiques in the early 1970’s and by the late 70’s transitioned into becoming an antique dealer. She initially opened a shop in the barn on their property in Claverack, NY. As the business expanded, Kathleen and her husband Philip expanded the business into the main house and initially kept an apartment upstairs.
In 1981, the 18th Century Dutch brick house in Catskill, NY came on the market and Philip and Kathleen snatched it up as Kathleen had always dreamed of buying this jewel of a house. Kathleen continued to maintain the Claverack Antique center but eventually closed it down in the early 80’s. She eventually moved her antique business to their home in Catskill. While she was occasionally open to the public, she mostly focused on selling directly to the trade.
In the 1990’s, their antique business grew to include her husband, Philip. While Philip had always “helped out” with the business, they became a true partnership. This enabled Kathleen to expand their business to include interior decorating, her most notable client being Marcy Carcy (an LA sitcom producer). Throughout the 2000’s Kathleen continued to interior decorating for people that wanted a focus on a rustic country look.
Philip and Kathleen continued the business until 2010 when they decided it was time to retire.
On Saturday, August 3, Stair Galleries is happy to honor the Estate of Mr. and Mrs. Seibel with a sale filled with a fine selection of painted American furniture, boxes, yelloware, tôleware, decorations and hooked rugs that they collected over decades combing the Hudson Valley and beyond.
